Healing on the Sabbath
Jesus went to the city of Jerusalem for a festival. People often went to a pool to cleanse themselves before a festival, hoping to be healed by the water. There were many people at the pool when Jesus went. One was a man that had been ill for 38 years. When Jesus saw him sitting near the pool he asked, "Do you want to be made well?" The man told Jesus, "I have no one to help me to the pool. And when I try to get there by myself, someone always steps in front of me."
Jesus commanded the man to get up, pick up his mat and walk. The man did so. When the religious leaders saw the man carrying his mat on the Sabbath they were shocked, this was against Sabbath rules. The healed man told them that Jesus commanded him to carry his mat when he healed him.
The religious leaders were angry with Jesus. He had broken the rules of the Sabbath and encouraged another man to do the same. But Jesus told them "God is still working, and I am working too."
